Diner Night: A Family Tradition

Tradition…what does it mean to you?!  To me, it means almost anything centered around my family!  Are you ready for a rare sneak peak at our “at-home” life? It’s fun, I promise! Welcome to Diner Night!  This past weekend we enjoyed Diner Night and I wanted to share it with you because well…it’s so dang fantastic!

I can’t take credit for this tradition, T started this with the boys before I came around, but they welcomed me into this tradition and it’s still one our favorite at home activities. It’s nothing complicated, nothing fancy, but it’s ours and we all love it! Well, T might not enjoy it as much as the rest of uf since he’s the burger and malt guru, but still…

So, what will you need for a diner night?!  You’ll need burgers, french fries or tater tots, and supplies for malts/shakes.  Oh, and don’t forget your fun attitude and a game or two wouldn’t hurt either!

Of course, our evening begins by grilling burgers…cheese on most of them of course!  While usually you find french fries at diners, in our house it’s mini tater tots that is preferred.  Of course, we must home-make chocolate malts  to with the burgers and tots!  Then, it’s pretty simple!  We enjoy our feast with each other and spend time laughing and talking during the meal!

Usually, if diner night is on a weekend, we follow-it up with game night!  Yup, it’s that simple!  That’s our family tradition!  We have other traditions as well, but I digress!  The point is that no matter how old the boys get, we have a couple traditions that we’ve kept.  As they are getting older the number of times in a year that we get to partake in these traditions is getting smaller, but we still do it!  I think it’s important for several reasons, but ultimately I hope we are building memories for the boys that they will carry with them their entire life!

What family traditions do you and your family have?  I’d love to hear about them!

  1. Love your family diner tradition. What games do you play? We have had fun family traditions through the years too. When my boys were little my husband traveled all the time so the boys and I had Big Bed Night. We piled games books and snacks on the bed popped in a Disney DVD and hung out together on the bed- the key words for a tired Mom.

  2. Love it! I would totally go for Diner Night at our house. I’m a sucker for any tradition that involves ice cream…

One “food” tradition that we have is that we have pizza on Friday nights, lay out a blanket in the living room, and have a “picnic” watching a movie of the kids’ choosing.

  3. We used to do ‘fancy restaurant’ night when Dad wasn’t home. I would set up the table with candles, music and good dishes and pretend to be your and Nathan’s waitress even though we only served things like macaroni and cheese or chicken and noodles. Served two purposes: made a fun night when you were missing dad and taught you restaurant manners.
