Girls Day at Enchanted Acres

If you’ve followed me for any certain amount of time, you know that I’m surrounded by boys and guys.  It’s all guys at work and all guys at home. (Ms. Nike doesn’t count, does she?!)  So, when I heard about all the fun happening at Enchanted Acres this past weekend, I knew it would be a great day for a Girls Day!  I called my friend Erinne and she happily joined me for an afternoon of fun at the pumpkin patch.

If you’ve never been to Enchanted Acres near Sheffield, Iowa, you don’t know what you’re missing.  Owner, Shannon Latham, has thought of everything!  There is something for everyone.  For us, our girls day started with a stop in Gepetto’s Workshop to paint our own pumpkins.  For only $5, visitors can select a small decorative pumpkin and then paint and decorate it!  This past weekend, it was painting, so paint we did.  (If you recall from my mixed media experience, being creative can be a challenge for me.  Thankfully, I channeled my wreath making creativity and my pumpkin is good enough to have sit out!  Shannon’s mom, Shirley, was on standby to explain the process to us and then let us be with cups full of a variety of sizes of paint brushes and large array of craft paint!

About 20 minutes later and we had completed painting our little pumpkins!  (While we were onto the next portion of our day, Shirley sprayed the pumpkins with a clear coat to help make them last in Iowa elements!)

The next item on our girls day was to listen to special guest speaker, Darcy Maulsby, speak about her book, A Culinary History of Iowa.  Now, we all know how much I love food, so it’s a given that I’m going to love this presentation.  But, even more exciting is that I’ve become friends with Darcy through the world of blogging and social media. It was great to learn about her latest project and catch up with her!  Plus, the information she talks about in her book is so interesting as I love anything history related!  Did you know there used to be vegetable flavored jello??  (I also purchased her book and got it signed!)

Our final stop of the day was to “The Market” which is a quaint part of Shannon’s red barn where you can find a variety of fall, autumn, and Halloween themed home decor.  You can also find a variety of yummy treats like different flavors of chex mix and puppy chow!  And don’t forget to grab a jar (or four) of her mom’s homemade strawberry jam.  I promise that you will not be disappointed.  I always stock up for the year each fall because I refuse to eat any other kind!  Yup, it’s that good!

Of course, if a girls day isn’t in your books, there’s lots of fun things to do with the kiddos at Enchanted Acres like the corn pile, Shannon’s goats, a goose, the pumpkin canon, and so much more!  Make sure to check out their schedule to see what’s coming up at the patch!

Whether it’s a day date with your special someone, a girls day, or a family outing, your stop at Enchanted Acres will be just that…enchanting!  Stop by and tell them Katy sent you!!

  1. What a great lineup of activities Enchanted Acres has had this fall and there is more of it to come! We are fortunate to have this awesome place to play in the fall in North Iowa.
