September Comments For A Cause: Franklin County Youth for Christ

I know it’s been a few months since I participated in Comments for a Cause, but I always want to make sure that if I’m giving, it’s from the heart and for a cause that I feel strongly about. The other day I was driving to work and listening to our local radio station.  Every day about 7:35 they play a segment called “Lighten Up & Live with Ken Davis.”  If you don’t know who Ken Davis is, he’s a Christian comedian who is hysterical!  (My dad and I actually both listen and often text or call each other about his laugh for the day!)  Every day they play this segment, which is just a 30 second – 1 minute story or comedy routine that is humorous, but also has a spiritual message to it!  This segment is sponsored by Compassion International and brought to us local listeners by Franklin County Youth for Christ…and, as I was listening the other morning it came to me…they would be the recipient of my next Comments for a Cause.

Darwin VanHorn is the director of the Franklin County Youth for Christ Chapter (of the North Iowa Youth For Christ).  He has built a program from nothing several yeas ago to a flourishing program now.

YFC has 2 different programs during the school year.  The first being for middle school students grades 6-8 on youthWednesday afternoon from 2-5 (our kids get out early for teacher in-service every Wednesday).  The kids get a snack, time to play with the games (and things like pool tables, Foosball, etc), then there is Club Time in which they work with faith based topics that are applicable to the kid’ lives like honesty, obeying, respect, etc.  Then, the get time to hang out, work on homework, etc.  Their averaged 40 kids each Wednesday last year, but also saw more than 80 different kids throughout the year.

The second organized group is for high school students.  They meet on Wednesdays from 6-7:30.  They get supper and then have an hour large group to discuss faith based topics that are focused on teens.  There are several kids that have organized small groups that meet after that as well.  High school students also have the opportunity to go on trips & mission events.

YFC provides some amazing programming and events for the kids in our area for FREE…even better, Van Horn is working to foster the faith in our youth!  That is priceless!  So, for every comment made on my posts this month, I will donate 50 cents to the Franklin County Youth for Christ program to help fund and continue their after school program.

So please!  Comment every day, comment several times a day!  It’s all for a good cause! 😉
